McKinney-Vento Assistance Program (Homeless Education)

Every child deserves a stable, supportive learning environment — regardless of their housing situation. The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program at Coweta Public Schools exists to ensure that students can continue their education without interruption during times of transition or uncertainty.

What Is the McKinney-Vento Program?

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program is a federal program designed to protect the educational rights of children and youth who are experiencing temporary or unstable housing. This may include families who are living with others due to financial hardship, staying in temporary housing, or experiencing other housing challenges.

The goal is simple: to remove barriers to education and keep students connected, supported, and engaged in school.

Why This Program Exists

Housing changes can happen for many reasons and to many families. The McKinney-Vento Act was developed to ensure that students are not penalized or excluded from school due to circumstances beyond their control.

This program helps make sure that:

  • Students can enroll in school right away, even if certain documents are not immediately available.

  • Educational stability is prioritized, so students can remain focused on learning.

  • Families feel welcomed, supported, and respected, not judged.

How McKinney-Vento Can Help

Families who qualify for McKinney-Vento services may receive assistance that helps reduce stress and supports student success, such as:

  • Help with immediate school enrollment

  • Assistance navigating school requirements and records

  • Support from a dedicated district liaison who can answer questions and connect families to resources

  • Help addressing barriers that may affect school attendance or participation

Support is provided with care, confidentiality, and compassion, and services are based on individual student needs.

A Supportive, Judgment-Free Resource

Requesting assistance through the McKinney-Vento program is not something to feel uncomfortable about. It is a resource designed to help families during challenging times and to ensure students can continue learning, growing, and feeling connected at school.

Many families experience temporary housing challenges at some point — McKinney-Vento is here to help during those moments and to ensure students have every opportunity to succeed.
